Amazon.ca · Market Expansion Plan

Chai Tonics
Canada Expansion

A step-by-step plan to launch Chai Tonics on Amazon Canada — from opening the account through to go-live — built on the same launch process we use for the US.

Lead: Matea Rudnicki, Brand Manager
Client: Chai Tonics · Dr Neeta Bhushan
Prepared: September 2026

The good news: we already have the listings, images, A+ content and Storefront built for the US — so Canada is largely a reuse-and-localize exercise, not a build from scratch. The main new work is compliance and account setup. Even better — Ares already runs a Canadian supplement brand (Sewanti) on Amazon.ca, so the team has been through this process before.

!

The one thing that sets the timeline: NPN

Chai Tonics' adaptogenic products count as Natural Health Products in Canada. Every one needs a Natural Product Number (NPN) — a licence from Health Canada — before it can be sold. Getting the NPN takes the longest, so we start it on day one and run everything else alongside it. (An NPN is like the Canadian version of the NSF/GMP approval we're already handling in the US.)

What's different about Canada

Compliance

Supplements are regulated as NHPs — each product needs an NPN + a Canadian import site licence. This is the big one.

English

Canada uses British-style spelling (colour, flavour, litre). Our US copy works — we do a light localization pass so it reads native.

French

Bilingual EN/FR labelling is legally required on packaging. French listing text is recommended — Quebec is ~¼ of Canada.

Currency

Price in CAD with a proper margin check — not a straight conversion from USD.

Tax

GST/HST registration plus Non-Resident Importer setup to bring stock into Canada.

Account

Amazon.ca runs off our existing North America account — no new business to open.

The plan — beginning to end

1

Foundations & Compliance

The critical path — starts immediately
Start day 1
  • 01Confirm with client we're proceeding with the NHP/NPN route; collect full formulations, ingredient amounts and dosages for each product.Matea → Client
  • 02Engage a Canadian NHP compliance partner and file NPN applications for each chai product.Angelica / Compliance
  • 03Arrange a Canadian import site licence holder (required to release US-made NHPs for sale).Angelica / Compliance
  • 04Confirm classification per product (NHP vs food); flag the Ritual Card Deck as non-NHP — it can launch faster.Angelica / Matea
  • 05Kick off bilingual (EN/FR) labelling artwork.Gabbie / Creative
2

Account & Market Setup

Runs in parallel with Phase 1

Fulfillment & Go-Live Prep

Indicative timeline

Weeks 1–2
NPN filings + import site licence begin · account, tax & importer setup starts.
Weeks 2–6
Content localization, French translation, keyword research and CAD pricing — all completed while NPNs are in review.
NPN review
The gating step — typically several months. We keep everything else fully ready so approval is the only thing we're waiting on.
On approval
Category approval · create listings · ship into FBA Canada (~2–4 weeks).
Then
Go live · Vine · PPC · ongoing growth.

The launch date is gated by NPN approval times. Firmer dates will be confirmed with the compliance partner once filings are in.
